Replaying the Uncharted Games
I’ve played through all the Uncharted games many times. It’s one of my favourite video games series of all time, and though I don’t agree with all the turns it has taken, it’s still immensely replayable.
My PS3 is boxed up and I don’t feel like pulling it out and hooking it up these days, but since I got UNCHARTED: The Nathan Drake Collection for “free” from PlayStation Plus, I was able to play through all the Uncharted games on my PS4, with a single entry on Vita.
Let’s go through and find out how they held up!
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
The PS4 upgrade to this game has smoothed out some textures but it still controls like ass. Nathan jumps off cliffs and clumsily moves between cover, usually in the wrong direction. The core gameplay itself is still fun, seeing as third-person cover-based shooters aren’t going out of style any time soon. The story is also pretty good until you get into zombies. I can see introducing Nazis and zombies in a later entry as sort of a nod to cliches, but the first entry in a series? Gutsy.
Reasons I wouldn’t replay this game:
- The controls. Oh, the controls.
- Having to redo the boat levels.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Largely considered to be the best in the series, this entry fixes most of the broken stuff in the first game. The controls work, Nathan doesn’t walk off cliffs, and the weapon selection is more interesting. A great multiplayer community exists (existed?) for this game too, with a good mode selection and well-designed maps. The villain in the game is more interesting and the exposition took some thinking.
Reasons I would replay this game:
- Seeing Lazarovich again.
- Fighting a tank in a Tibetan village.
Reasons I wouldn’t replay this game:
- Some of the climbing sections (like in the mountain).
- Yetis.
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
This was the first Uncharted game to be released after I’d played the first two, so I have a soft spot for it. The story and acting are very good and the different environments are epic in scope. Again, good multiplayer functionality. The weapon selection is great and the sheer variety of locations keeps things fresh.
Reasons I would replay this game:
- Epic escape sequence.
Reasons I wouldn’t replay this game:
- Escaping the Rub’ al Khali desert again.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss
It was painful to run through this one again. Lame story, boring characters, predictable action, awful controls. If you are an Uncharted completist, do not bother chasing down a Vita for this.
Reaso forget it
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
What an upgrade! The graphics (particularly set pieces and faces) are so detailed, and the set pieces are incredible. Driving down the streets of Madagascar while dodging a truck with a machine gun, taking shortcuts over someone’s roof, this is the pinnacle of the entire series.
The multiplayer is very good here, and all the different modes that go with it. It’s also fairly easy to find a game, particularly if you want your ass handed to you.
Bonus for people who like certain sequences – you can jump straight to any action sequence you’ve played before.
Reasons I would replay this game:
- Some of the sequences like the prison escape or driving through Madagascar.
- The story is so sweet.
- Multiplayer is fantastic.
Reasons I wouldn’t replay this game:
- Too many climbing sequences.
- Navigating the ruins of Libertalia.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Never saw this coming. A fitting game in its own right, the chemistry and developing relationship between Chloe and Nadine is realistic and never gets in the way. Driving around in a jeep is more fun than in Uncharted 4. The story ain’t too shabby either, even if things tie up too neatly in the end.
You also get the same multiplayer mode (and share a profile) with Uncharted 4.
Reasons I would replay this game:
- It’s quick to get into the action.
- Multiplayer is fantastic.
Reasons I wouldn’t replay this game:
- Can’t think of any. It’s not my favourite in the series but it’s up there.
